A Set-Covering-Based Heuristic Approach for Bin-Packing Problems

چکیده
Several combinatorial optimization problems can be formulated as large size SetCovering Problems. In this work, we use the Set-Covering formulation to obtain a general heuristic algorithm for this type of problems, and describe our implementation of the algorithm for solving two variants of the well-known (One-Dimensional) Bin Packing Problem: the Two-Constraint Bin Packing Problem and the basic version of the Two-Dimensional Bin Packing Problem, where the objects cannot be rotated and no additional requirements are imposed. In our approach, both the “column generation” and the “column optimization” phases are heuristically performed. In particular, in the first phase, we do not generate the entire set of columns, but only a small subset of it, by using greedy procedures and fast constructive heuristic algorithms from the literature. In the second phase, we solve the associated Set-Covering instance by means of a Lagrangian-based heuristic algorithm. Extensive computational results on test instances from the literature show that, for the two considered problems, this approach is competitive, with respect to both the quality of the solution and the computing time, with the best heuristic and metaheuristic algorithms proposed so far.

Online LIB problems: Heuristics for Bin Covering and lower bounds for Bin Packing
We consider the NP Hard problems of online Bin Covering and Packing while requiring that larger (or longer, in the one dimensional case) items be placed at the bottom of the bins, below smaller (or shorter) items — we call such a version, the LIB version of problems. Bin sizes can be uniform or variable. We look at computational studies for both the Best Fit and Harmonic Fit algorithms for unif...
متن کاملBin-Completion Algorithms for Multicontainer Packing and Covering Problems
Bin-completion, a bin-oriented branch-and-bound approach, was recently shown to be promising for the bin packing problem. We propose several improvements to bin-completion that significantly improves search efficiency. We also show the generality of bin-completion for packing and covering problems involving multiple containers, and present bin-completion algorithms for the multiple knapsack, bi...
متن کاملHeuristic and exact algorithms for Generalized Bin Covering Problem
In this paper, we study the Generalized Bin Covering problem. For this problem an exact algorithm is introduced which can nd optimal solution for small scale instances. To nd a solution near optimal for large scale instances, a heuristic algorithm has been proposed. By computational experiments, the eciency of the heuristic algorithm is assessed.
متن کاملBin Completion Algorithms for Multicontainer Packing, Knapsack, and Covering Problems
Many combinatorial optimization problems such as the bin packing and multiple knapsack problems involve assigning a set of discrete objects to multiple containers. These problems can be used to model task and resource allocation problems in multi-agent systems and distributed systems, and can also be found as subproblems of scheduling problems. We propose bin completion, a branch-and-bound stra...
متن کاملAugmented neural networks and problem structure-based heuristics for the bin-packing problem
In this paper, we apply the Augmented-neural-networks (AugNN) approach for solving the classical bin-packing problem (BPP). AugNN is a meta-heuristic that combines a priorityrule heuristic with the iterative learning approach of neural networks, to generate good solutions fast. This is the first time this approach has been applied to the BPP. We also propose a decomposition approach for solving...
